Welcome to Textiles LiveThe Sustainable,
Affordable Luxury of
Artisan Designed
Hand Craft
Rethinking LuxuryLuxury as we have known it excludes. But luxury also brings comfort,
satisfaction and well-being.
As human connection becomes a luxury,
craft created by an individual, instilled with
inspiration, style and the intimacy of touch
can be an inclusive, affordable luxury.
Can we think of not being in a hurry,
of sharing artisans' criteria for quality?
Can we think of exchange that is not
purely economic, and of
Artisan Designers and clients
knowing each other?
Meeting Artisan DesignersOnline or in their studios,
is a fulfilling experience.
We hope that
Artisan Designed
handcraft can encourage
a trend toward a more
mindful & enriched
life & remind us
of the importance of
beauty & joy.
"I realize that it was for her children's sake
that my mother pinned up her hair
so carefully every morning.
In turn... I put on something pretty...
when I am staying in a house
where there are children."
~ Margaret Mead, Blackberry Winter

ABOUT US

Founder Judy Frater

Judy Frater traveled to India at age 19 to improve her batik techniques.

On a trip to Kutch, she discovered embroidery and diverted to exploring the mystery of austere women creating raucous colourful tableaus.

She went on to do Masters Degrees in Anthropology at the University of Minnesota and Museum Studies at the University of Washington, and continued research on traditional textiles of Kutch for over 30 years.

She authored the award-winning book Threads of Identity, and chapters in several other books.

LITTLE LUXURIES:

TRADITIONAL ARTISANS IN THE WORLD OF CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

We travel to learn.

We can enjoy skimming the surface of exotica, or we can go slower, meet individuals, experience and understand a bit of their worlds.

Our aim is to introduce you to who made the textiles you find, why and how.

To experience is to gather cherished memories, to connect, to love. In experiencing other worlds, we understand our own—and increase value for both.
